Beluga Delivers Group Chat to Smartphones, Browsers

If Google had executed Google Wave correctly, it would’ve looked something like Beluga, a cross-platform group chat client available for Android phones, iPhones and any computer with a web browser.
The free service has a streamlined interface for group chatting. Conversations are called “Pods,” so when you start chatting with a friend you create a Pod, [...]

Rdio reveals version 1.0 of iPhone app, slicker, faster, better than Spotify

Rdio, the subscription-only music-on-demand service, has massively overhauled its iPhone, iPad and iPod app. Initial response seems positive: the previous version of the app surfed around the 2 1/2-star mark on iTunes, and the new one is already racking up plenty of 5-star reviews. It's still only available in North America, incidentally.

The new interface is beautiful (and boy does it make the Android version look ugly -- as always), but more importantly, Rdio 1.0 for iOS also adds a few vital features that bring it into line with Spotify's mobile offering. You now have complete control over offline syncing, and you can easily see what albums and playlists are available for offline play. The music player now sits at the bottom of the screen, no matter which part of the app you're in, too.

In the social arena, Rdio continues to kick Spotify's ass. Now when you log in, you'll be greeted with a plethora of exciting options, including quick access to Top Charts, Recommended and New Releases. Spotify, meanwhile, only has "What's new." Search has been boosted, too: not only can you search through millions of individual tracks and albums, but you can now also search for playlists and people; neither of which Spotify can do.

Here's hoping that the Android, BlackBerry and Windows Phone 7 incarnations of the Rdio app all receive similar updates in the next few weeks! And that Spotify does something with its almost non-existent social layer...

Tablet shocker! MSI WindPad 100A packs Tegra 2 and will ship with Honeycomb

At this point, MSI has been showing off its 10-inch Android tablet for a good half a year, but at least this time it's coming clean with some specs, and they're actually not half bad. Yep, the company brought its WindPad 100A to CeBIT and has announced that it, like most of the others, is powered by a dual-core Tegra 2 processor and will get some sweet Honeycomb when it hits the market in late May or early June. The model on hand at CeBIT was running some 2.X version of Android, and the hardware was identical to the one we saw back at CES. MSI's told us that pricing hasn't been set yet, but hopefully, like Moto's Sanjay Jha just proclaimed, these tablet prices will be dropping come the second half of the year. Hit the gallery below for some closer hands-on shots.

Dell Venue Pro arrives in the UK at long last: 459 off contract, shipping in 10 days

Time for a quick memory check: remember the WP7 slider that Dell announced some months ago? That's right, it's the Venue Pro -- the one that's been struggling to meet demand in the US due to some mysterious reworking. Well, here's some good news for the folks on the other side of the pond: starting today, Dell's UK store is taking orders for this unlocked slider for a hefty £459 ($745), and the first deliveries are expected to arrive in 10 days. Man, these wicked people from Round Rock sure love making us wait, but better late than never, right?

Apple?s iPad Still Has No Competition

Editor's Note: Jim Dalrymple has been writing about Apple for more than 15 years. You can follow him on Twitter @jdalrymple and on his Web site at The Loop. It's been almost a year since Apple released the iPad and we're less than a week away from the unveiling of the iPad 2, and still there's no competition. There are a few very good reasons for Apple's success and why its competitors are finding it difficult to gain any traction against the king of digital devices. There's the infrastructure, the combination of hardware and software, and the fact that its competitors are content to settle for second best.
