Skype 5.3 for Windows released, improves mobile video call quality

Version 5.3 of Skype for Windows has just been released, with the main emphasis of the new release being improved call quality, and the quality of video received by mobile Skype users. Presumably one party of the video call must be using Skype for Windows 5.3, though.

Beyond improved call quality, not much has changed. You can now see your friends' presence icons when contact cards are collapsed, and the topic editing button is now always visible on the conversation header. For a complete list of changes, hit up the Skype Garage blog.

How To Burn Off a Pound of Candy

By Brent Rose

If there is anything we learn in childhood, it?s that Halloween is when you get to cram your gaping maw with absurd amounts of candy. And, because we haven?t quite grown up, we still plan to do that tonight. We’re going to eat a pound of candy.

With age, though, comes some awareness that a pound of candy is an unhealthy thing to eat. Enough exercise, theoretically, could burn it back off. But what would you have to do to work your way back to the shape you were in before the Halloween binge?

Get a Letterpress t-shirt, help support the Red Cross

The fine folks at United Pixel Workers have produced at Letterpress t-shirt in both light and dark theme variants. If you buy one -- or more -- Letterpress developer Loren Brichter of Atebits will donate his share (about $5) to the Red Cross. Great game. Great shirt. Great cause.

They're only available for the next 4 days, so if you want one, act fast. (I ordered 3).

And if you haven't played Letterpress yet, check out Dave Wiskus' review.

ZTE launches Nubia range of high-end devices, announces Z5 quad-core smartphone

ZTE unveils highend Nubia mobile line, launches Z5 quadcore, 13megapixel, Italian design

ZTE's plan to reinvent itself as a high-end smartphone was missing one, crucial ingredient -- a European-sounding name that ended in "...ia" to brand its new range of top-level devices. That's why the company has just announced Nubia, which apparently means "cloudy" in Latin. It's also teased details of the first handset to arrive under this new cloud (geddit?), the Z5. This new 5-inch smartphone will have quad-core internals, a 13-megapixel camera and "Italian" design -- which makes us hope above hope that they hired Pininfarina and it'll come in Ferrari Red.

Goophone, a Chinese company best known for cloning Apple products, reportedly will release its iPad mini doppelganger in November. The "GooPad mini," which already appears on posters, will sell for $99, while Apple's iPad mini will cost $329 but won't be sold right away in China. Goophone has even taken the liberty of ripping off Apple's "Every inch an iPad" tagline: "Every inch a GooPad mini."

We're only about a week and a half away from the November 8 release of Angry Bird Star Wars and Rovio has released a video teaser that shows some actual gameplay footage. This video reveals that the red bird will be like Luke Skywalker and be able to tear down structures by whirling his lightsaber while colliding with them, and the pink bird will be playing the roll as Princess Leah and have the ability to call down laser fire during her descent.

Does this video make you more excited than you already were for Angry Birds Star Wars?

Google holds back on open-sourcing Honeycomb, heralds massive shift for Android

Android Honeycomb
Google, in an interesting but not entirely unexpected twist, will not be open-sourcing Android 3.0 Honeycomb for the foreseeable future.

Historically, Android is usually open-sourced via the Android Open Source Project (AOSP) a few days or weeks after the code is finalized. While this departure from the norm won't affect OEMs like HTC and Motorola that have access to internal builds of Android, small-time developers will likely have to wait months before rolling their own distributions.

As to why Google is holding back Honeycomb, its reasons are actually rather rational. Honeycomb, while originally intended to run on all mobile form factors, is only ready for deployment on tablets. "To make our schedule to ship the tablet, we made some design tradeoffs," says Andy Rubin, the head of Google's Android group. "We didn't want to think about what it would take for the same software to run on phones. It would have required a lot of additional resources and extended our schedule beyond what we thought was reasonable. So we took a shortcut."

In other words, Google wants to prevent OEMs and homebrew developers like Cyanogen from rolling their own smartphone versions of Honeycomb -- it doesn't want to see the same bitter-tasting tabletified bastardization that occurred with Android 2.1 and 2.2 last year.

Windows 8 getting a built-in PDF reader, Metro-style

For what seems like an eternity, Download Squad readers have reacted to news of security exploits targeting Adobe Reader with a common sentiment: why doesn't Microsoft build its own secure PDF reader into Windows? Apparently the Windows 8 team agrees, and they're working away at an application called Modern Reader which is exactly that.

From the handful of screenshots Paul Thurrott has shared, it's clear that Modern Reader has been built with Metro in mind. You can see the Reader back button in the top-left corner of the yellow image and the minimal page navigation bar on the right. We've posted some larger images we managed to scrape from Google's cache after the break.

Thurrott also mentions that Modern Reader is the first program spotted which is built using AppX -- a packaging technology that may allow developers to roll a single build to both Windows 8 desktops and Windows Phone 8 mobile devices.

Iceland: Where Citizens Govern via Facebook

Iceland recently drafted a new constitution, a noteworthy event for two reasons: first, because new constitutions aren't all that common and second, because citizens were invited to participate via social networking sites. While not Iceland's most pure example of crowdsourcing, the constitutional update made extensive use of public input.
