Windows 7 Taskbar Items Pinner makes it easy to pin special folders

Pinning programs, folders, and even frequently used documents to your Windows 7 taskbar can be a real time-saver. Certain folders, however, aren't so easy to add -- especially if you want them right on the taskbar and not buried in the Explorer jump list.

Windows 7 Taskbar Items Pinner makes pinning everything from your downloads folder to the control panel to network connections as easy as ticking a checkbox. Just download Pinner from Door2Windows, extract the files, and right-click the executable to run it as Administrator. The app also allows you to unpin existing items, and you can even integrate Pinner into your context menu if you like.

If you want to add Control Panel to your taskbar, we still recommend using the method we showed you -- pinning it with Pinner won't give you a jump list to utilize.

Monaco 3500mAh Battery for the HTC EVO 4G Review

Probably the biggest complaint leveled against the Sprint HTC Evo 4G when it was launched was about a short life from its 1700mHa battery. It did not take long for several companies to offer bigger batteries, which were also thicker and meant different backs, cases, etc. Monaco offers a battery and back combination that promises [...]

Former Apple employee admits he sold confidential info, cost the company in excess of $2 million

Paul Devine, the man who last August collected a pretty lengthy list of charges against his name from the FBI and IRS -- which collectively amounted to an accusation of "screwing Apple" -- has now admitted his guilt. Specifically, Devine has fessed up to wire fraud, conspiracy and money laundering, in which he engaged while exchanging confidential information about upcoming Apple products for cold hard cash from interested parts suppliers. He's now having to forfeit $2.28 million in money and property that resulted from his nefarious exploits, with sentencing scheduled for June 6th. Devine's lawyer is quoted as saying he's a "good man who made a mistake, and now he's trying to make amends." Indeed, the mistake of getting caught and the amends of trying not to go to prison. Jump past the break for a full statement on the matter from the US Department of Justice.

Banshee media player for Windows goes alpha

banshee audio video player windows
Banshee has been one of the top Linux media players for ages, and now the venerable audio and video app has officially made its way to Windows. The first alpha release of Banshee for Windows is now available for download, and it's exactly what you would expect: it's very true to the Linux experience, and it's got a few kinks which still need working out before it's ready for prime time on Windows.

Like any good media player, Banshee offers features like smart playlist, podcast, audiobook, and online radio support, ID3 tag editing, song ratings, track information lookup, full screen mode, system tray playback controls, and toast notifications.

Unfortunately, it's still rather rough around the edges. Banshee's Last.fm features and equalizer caused numerous crashes, and the app eventually quit trying to play tracks after a handful of restarts. Rebooting Windows was the only way to get Banshee playing again.

Still, this is just the first alpha release! We're sure that things will improve quickly with future builds.

Linux Mint 10 KDE released; Mint 11 based on Ubuntu 11.04, but no Unity

Mint 10 KDE
Just a few days after the emergence of a release candidate, Linux Mint 10 KDE has been released. There are a few bugs (most notably, VLC is slow to open files), so be sure to check the full release notes.

Mint, which claims to be the 4th most popular desktop operating system (behind Windows, OS X and Ubuntu), prides itself on its elegance and out-of-the-box ease-of-use. With version 10, the only significant change is the addition of KDE 4.6, but the Software Manager and Update Manager have also received numerous tweaks. Adobe Flash 10.2 'Square' also makes its first appearance with Mint 10.

If you want to give Mint 10 a go, be sure to grab it from one of the mirrors, or use the 32- or 64-bit torrents -- the Mint site itself seems pretty slow at the moment, probably because of Mint's massive popularity...!

As far as Mint 11 goes, we now know that it will be called 'Katya', based on Ubuntu 11.04 Natty Narwhal, and released in May. Interestingly, Mint 11 will use neither GNOME Shell or Unity -- instead, it will use a traditional GNOME 3-based desktop layout.

Facebook has tweaked the function of its so-called Like button, think link users click to register approval or support of various messages, posts and profiles on the social networking site. As it stands now, when you are on Facebook and decide to "Like" something, the only thing that happens is you get added to that external page's "Like" list, and a small blurb gets posted to your Wall.

For One Non-Gmail User, Everything?s Just Peachy

A month or so ago, I wrote about how Google's apparent willingness to secretly hand over user data to the feds had made me rethink my obsession with cloud storage. Not - natch - because I have anything in particular to hide from Uncle Sam, but rather because if I?m going to have my data subpoenaed, I?d rather know about it so I can write blog posts and make self-promotional hay about it. I also have a bit of a thing for physical security: storing my mail in a physical location rather than in the cloud so, even with access to password, no-one can hack into my old correspondence and share it with the world. Mentioning no names: TechCrunch.

Sony touts high-speed 17.7 megapixel CMOS sensor for cellphones

It's been over a year since Sony introduced the world's first 16.41 megapixel CMOS sensor for cellphones (pictured at right), but the company's now finally back with another entrant in the megapxiel race: a 17.7 megapixel sensor. This one delivers more than just a higher resolution, though, as it's also Sony's first sensor with a bandwidth of 34.8Gbps (or about five times faster than previous CMOS sensors), which promises to allow for 120 fps video at full resolution -- assuming the phone's processor and storage are able to keep up, of course. What's more, the new sensor is also said to boast some improved consumption and, according to Nikkei, it seems that Sony is planning to use it in digital cameras in addition to cellphones, although there's no word as to when either of those will be available.

Firefox 4 infographic from Mozilla taunts IE9

Not one to let it lie (yes, Asa, we're looking at you), Mozilla's Technical Evangelist, Paul Rouget, has produced a fancy infographic that details just how much ass Firefox 4 kicks in comparison to IE9. If you're in a hurry, here's the summary: FIREFOX RULES; IE9 SUX. For detailed analysis, read on.

For the most part Rouget relies in Firefox's pure, numerical superiority, rather than real-world use cases. Firefox 4 supports more of the HTML5 and CSS3 standards. Firefox implements almost the entire JavaScript API, as opposed to IE9's mediocre 48%. Firefox supports more Web technologies. To really drive it home, the infographic even shows how Firefox 3.5 and 3.6 are superior to Microsoft's latest offering.

Don't be mesmerized by the tawdry typography, though: with juicy propaganda it's always what isn't said that matters. There is no mention of IE9's hyperspeed JavaScript engine, Chakra. There's no mention of pinned tabs or per-process tabs or Tracking Protection Lists. It feels a bit like a scrawny, bespectacled geek throwing stones at a fat billionaire with three trophy wives -- the nerd is probably right, but the pimp doesn't really care.

There's no doubt that Firefox 4 implements a broader range of Web technologies -- and don't get us wrong, it is an excellent browser -- but more stuff doesn't necessarily equate to better stuff. You can do a lot more with a pick-up truck than a Ferrari, but choosing which one you want to drive isn't necessarily an easy decision

Comcast CEO talks about the merger, 'cool new devices' like the iPad and why he doesn't fear Netflix

Now that the world has had a few weeks to get used to the new Comcast/NBC collabo (but not that ugly purple logo), CEO Brian Roberts talked to the Wall Street Journal about plans for the future, including his claim that Netflix is actually a good thing for his company. Roberts referred to Netflix as the new version of reruns, and explained his view that it raises the value of NBCUniversal's content while reiterating statements made earlier about lower-than-expected subscriber losses being tied more to the economy than anything else. Beyond the soft jabs, he discounted the possibility that Comcast might launch its own internet video service for non-cable subscribers, pushing the vision of adding internet video streaming options for existing customers and explaining how they'd "be able to use the devices that are cool and new, that they typically purchased themselves, to now control and interact with the device they also love, which is a brand new high def 3-D TV." Of course, it doesn't look like we're closer to choosing our own UI for browsing content, but with nicely designed apps for tablets, phones and connected TVs maybe the platform for future innovation he references has something for us to look forward to after all -- we'd consider new cable boxes that don't suck to be a good start.
