HTC Merge / Lexicon user manual leaks out

We've already seen the phone itself in the wild, and the folks over at Droid Life have now gotten their hands on what appears to be an early version of the HTC Merge / Lexicon user guide. While there's not a ton of surprises to be found, it does further confirm the inclusion of Bing (and Bing Maps), and the fact that it is indeed a global phone. What's more, Droid Life notes that any mention of the phone's name seems to have been left out, suggesting that HTC hasn't yet completely decided whether to call it the Merge, Lexicon or something else -- the site seems confident that it won't be called "Droid," however, although it says it's heard "murmurs" that was once under consideration.

Nintendo 3DS might update itself over WiFi, still won't cook you breakfast

Careful, gamers on the go: your next handheld might be a hotspot hunter. Along with the "tag mode" Nintendo revealed earlier this week, where the 3DS can seek out other similarly depth-endowed handhelds and exchange information automatically, comes a system called SpotPass, which enables connecting to any open hotspots -- even while sleeping like a baby. The purpose was ostensibly for passive downloading of game content and the like but, according to Nintendo prez Satoru Iwata, the company is pondering lumping automatic firmware updates into the mix. This would mean the 3DS would re-flash itself even while in suspended animation, in theory keeping software pirates and firmware buccaneers on their toes. As serious gamers who only purchase legal software (twice, just to be safe) this seems like a reasonable enough thing to do -- assuming we don't get any bogus firmware sneaking onto our $300 handhelds.

YouTube Time Machine helps you reminisce with YouTube videos from a certain year

YTTM apparently stands for "YouTube Time Machine," although that's not specifically mentioned on the site. What it does is very easy to understand, though. You move a slider to a specific year between 1860 and 2010, and you get a bunch of YouTube videos related to that year. Yes, I said 1860 (that's not a typo).

Not all hits are spot-on, though. When I chose 1972, I got a video from 1970. So, I guess you could say YMMV with YTTM (sorry, couldn't help myself there). But for the most part, the hits are relevant. I think it just takes the year from the video's name on YouTube.

You can narrow your search down by categories, such as Video Games, Television, Commercials, Current Events, Sports, Movies, and Music. I'm afraid there are not many video game related videos from the 19th century, though.

One detail which annoyed me was that toggling a filter reloads the entire page. It's as if AJAX was never invented - you click a button, and suddenly the whole page blinks out and reloads. I hope they get that fixed.

Notwithstanding this one quirk, YTTM is a nice way to travel through time. Just dial in a year, and watch the videos. When you've had enough of a certain clip, you can just click Watch next video and be transported to the next one - no searching involved.

Originally launched back in August (yes, we missed it!), the Bing Dynamic theme pack is a quick and easy way to get the latest and greatest Bing photos pasted all over your Windows 7 desktop wallpaper.

Four new images were added to the rotation today, but I honestly have no idea how many images are actually part of the pack. Apparently two new images are added every week -- it uses an RSS feed to discover new images! -- and there's nothing better than turning your computer on to be randomly surprised by a new, beautiful landscape, right?

What Color is a beautiful, minimalist way to convert numbers to colors

What Color, here demonstrated with the beautiful Lemon Bee color theme, is a very simple Web utility: You punch in the URL (whatcolor.heroku.com), add a slash, and then put in the HEX codes of whatever colors you'd like to see.

The tool accepts short notation, such as "cdc", or extended notation, such as "ccddcc". You can also just append the word "random" to the URL, and get a colorful surprise.

There are a couple of other tricks: You can prefix the URL with /a/ to get analogous colors (such as http://whatcolor.heroku.com/a/b03), or /c/ for complementary colors. And if you add a number at the end, you can control how many colors show up in the palette - here's a 15-color palette produced with a single, simple URL.

Now if only there was a quick way to copy the color codes from the page...

Foolography Unleashed Bluetooth geotagging modules land for Nikon D90 and Dx000 DSLRs

There's no shortage of fancy ways to geotag with your old beater of a shooter, but Foolography's new solutions for Nikon DSLRs might be one of the most understated. Two new "Unleashed" modules have just arrived, one for the Dx000 series (D3100, D5000, and D7000), and the other for the ultra-popular D90. The little Bluetooth modules embed GPS data from an external GPS receiver (yeah, it's BYOEGPSR) directly onto photos as you take them. They're retailing for €125 outside of the EU (about $170 US) and a bit more to consumers on the continent -- nobody ever said classy comes cheap.

Android Market devs, users in more countries able to buy and sell apps

One big knock against the Android Market has been the fact that developers could only receive payments from users in a handful of countries. Apart from adversely affecting global sales, that limitation also left a lot of developers who wanted to create localized Android apps frustrated. How can you you develop and sell an app targeted at Irish users if they can't pay for it in the Market?

That's all changed, however, following a recent announcement at the Android Developers Blog. The Market now supports purchasing in 18 additional countries: Argentina, Belgium, Brazil, Czech Republic, Denmark, Finland, Hong Kong, India, Ireland, Israel, Mexico, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Russia, Singapore, Sweden, and Taiwan. The expansion also allows developers in 20 more countries to sell their apps in the Market.

This change is likely a good thing for the Chrome Web Store as well, since it will in all likelihood be powered by the same payment back-end as the Android Market.

Letters of Note showcases historically significant letters

Letters of Note is a fantastic personal project by Shaun Usher. It's a clean looking blog with some extraordinary content: historical letters by people like Franz Kafka, Ray Bradbury, Jochen Rindt (the only posthumous Formula One World Champion), and other celebrities.

It's not all celebrities, though. The letter in the screenshot, for instance, was written by a bank manager from Hiroshima on May 22, 1950, and it's addressed to an American safe maker. The bank manager praises the quality of the safe, since it survived Little Boy's atomic blast. Today's letter is an extremely long diatribe by none other than Franz Kafka.

Each letter comes with an original high-resolution scan, a meticulous transcript (in the original language), and a very readable translation. The transcript includes any and all mistakes in the original - double spaces and all.

I find it remarkable that Shaun can get all of these collectors to send him letters. Each letter I've read so far has been illuminating, fascinating, and highly personal. These were obviously not meant as public PR statements, and they give a rare glimpse into the writer's personality and the circumstances in which they were written. I, for one, hope that Letters of Note survives far into the future.

The entire post is written in Latin, so of course, you have to copy and paste it into Google Translate to read it! Once you've done that, the usual machine-translated gems await!

My favourite phrase is right at the end: Ingeniarius Programmandi, which means Senior Engineer! I might have to put that on my LinkedIn profile...

DropMocks is a beautifully simple, HTML5-powered photo sharing site

I'm a big fan of Gmail's HTML5-powered drag-and-drop attachment feature, and I've been waiting to see it pop up in other Web apps. Thanks to Ryan Wagner over at CyberNet, I discovered DropMocks -- an amazingly simple little photo sharing site that offers the same functionality.

Open your pictures folder, select a few images, and drag them onto a DropMocks tab in a supported browser (Firefox 4 or Chrome 6 or 7). Once the upload is complete, you'll receive a short(ish) URL to share with your friends.

Multiple images are supported as well. Drag in five or six favorites, and DropMocks attaches them all to the same URL.

Clicking the previous or next image (or clicking a filename in the navigation box) causes it to slide into focus.

No account is required to use DropMocks, but if you do want to keep tabs on multiple uploads, all you need to do is sign in with your Google account. It's also totally free to use, at least for the time being.

DropMocks is about as easy as it gets when it comes to sharing photos between your desktop and the Web, and it's well worth adding to your bookmarks. It's certainly earned a place in mine.
