VMware adds Mozy to its cloud and virtualization empire

mozy vmware
Mozy is one of the most popular cloud backup services around, with more than one million users storing around 70 petabytes of data. Its popularity apparently put it on the acquisition radar of VMware -- which has now made Mozy part of its virtualization empire.

VMware's official blog post makes it clear that the company wasn't so much interested in Mozy as a consumer offering. Rather, it's the inner workings of Mozy which piqued VMware's curiosity. CTO Steve Herrod says, "Over the past 5 years, Mozy has built one of the best examples of a globally distributed, large-scale cloud offering." He adds that the move will allow VMware to "further ramp our own cloud-related learning and accelerate new IP, scale, and capabilities" of its existing offerings.

Existing Mozy customers don't need to worry, of course. VMware has pledged to continue running Mozy's service without interruption.

Smartphone Makers Bow to Demands for More Openness

For many Android enthusiasts, “openness” is almost an 11th commandment. So when manufacturers began restricting full access to Android smartphones a couple years ago, many saw it as a cardinal sin.
Good news for you smartphone modders: Some manufacturers are beginning to see the light.

Nexus S Seidio Innocell 3500mAh extended battery

Seidio Innocell 3200mAh battery for the Nexus S

Extended batteries and Android go together like peanut butter and jelly.  The phones are powerful and connected, and need the juice.  The Seidio Innocell 3500mAh battery for the Nexus S takes the simple idea of a larger battery to the extreme.  Checking in at more than double the standard 1440mAh battery for the Nexus S, it delivers when it comes to keeping you up and running longer.  If you're one who still talks a lot on the phone (yes, they really are phones!) you'll love it.

Here at the homestead, we dropped the landline ages ago.  My Nexus S is my phone, 24/7.  Whether I'm doing important business with Pizza Hut, calling Mom and Dad to say hello, or talking to my kids, it's all done with my Nexus S.  Phone calls can destroy the battery on an Android phone, but since I got the Seidio Innocell, I don't even worry about checking the battery status.  I still charge my phone every night, but I'll bet I wouldn't have to.

Until battery technology catches up with everything else, that's how it's going to be.  Android phones in particular, because they are so connected, tend to be hard on batteries, and we spend hours trying and discussing tricks to get more from their batteries.  The best trick of them all?  Get a big extended battery and stop worrying about it.  The Seidio Innocell  adds some girth to the profile (about 1 cm extra width), and comes with it's own battery cover -- one with Seidio's soft touch coated plastic.  All the cut-outs for camera, speaker and USB ports are there, and it doesn't feel bad in your hand at all.  The little bit of extra weight is no problem on a phone that many thought felt too light to start with.  One thing that needs mentioned, there is no NFC antenna in the extended battery cover.  You'll lose that functionality, if you had plans on ever using it.  Other than that, there's just not much here not to like. We've got a handful of pictures after the break, have a look.

If you find yourself fighting with your Nexus S battery more often than you would like, you can grab the Seidio Innocell 3500mAh battery from the Android Central store for $64.95.

Apple Brings iWork Suite To The iPhone, iPod Touch

When I got an iPad 2 test unit in the mail a few weeks back, one of the first things I noticed when browsing through apps was that the iWork suite of apps, Numbers, Pages, and Keynote, were all present in the App Store for the iPad. Immediately, I was overcome with jealousy. Of course, typing in Pages on the iPad isn?t the smoothest experience, but having access to these core apps is better than not, right? In any case, it looks like the iWork suite of apps has been doing pretty well on the iPad, as Apple has migrated those applications over to the iPhone and iPod touch.

Gargantuan SQL injection infects 3.8 million URLs, installs rogue antivirus

LizaMoon SQL injection rogue AV
Over the last few days, a mass SQL injection attack has been quickly gathering speed. Just three days ago only 28,000 URLs were affected, but at the time of writing, there could be up to 3.8 million infected URLs.

Websense
has a complete write up the attack, dubbed 'LizaMoon,' but here's the basic gist: it looks like someone is exploiting a vulnerabilty (or vulnerabilities) in hundreds of thousands of websites running on Microsoft SQL Server 2003 and 2005. It's not yet known whether this is a vulnerability in SQL Server, or simply a case of outdated, unmaintained, and easily-exploitable CMSes.

The attack takes the form of an SQL injection, which then inserts a link to a JavaScript file hosted on the attacker's server. This is repeated over and over until every Web page in the SQL database has been infected -- and considering 3.8 million URLs have been infected, you can see that this is a very easy, and automated, attack.

Fortunately, the JavaScript isn't particularly malicious: it pops up a rogue AV program called Windows Stability Center, but that's it. Better yet, the rogue antivirus is already recognized by a bunch of real antivirus suites, including Avast, Panda and Microsoft Security Essentials.

The real problem with SQL injection attacks is that there's nothing we surfers can do about them. There will always be old and unmaintained websites, and thus SQL injections will remain one of the easiest and most lucrative tools of hackers and spammers alike. All you can do is keep your antivirus and anti-malware software up to date, and pray.

Catch Andy Rubin's tease during the Google IO keynote?

Andy Rubin Android K version

Dunno how we all missed this during Google IO -- but we did. There in the demonstration of how you can resize widgets is either a fun little Easter egg, or a very excited Andy Rubin, who on May 6 apparently sent an e-mail with the following subject line:

K release — I've got the BEST name ever ...

Now all we have to do is figure out just what ol' Andy came up with. Any ideas?

Thanks, Brodie!

You can now rent Adobe Photoshop for $35 per month, CS 5.5 available soon

Rejoice! No longer will you have to fork over $700 for a Photoshop CS5 license! Adobe has unveiled a new subscription scheme where you can rent the entire Creative Suite, or individual packages, by the month, or for an entire year.

Adobe Photoshop can be yours for $35 per month if you agree to rent it for 12 months, or $49 per month if you require its services for a shorter period. Dreamweaver can be had for even cheaper, at just $19 per month. The entire Master Collection is still rather expensive, though, at $125 per month.

Today, Adobe also ushered in the release of Creative Suite 5.5, and simultaneously upped its release cycle from 18 months to 24 months. This means, if you rent Photoshop for two years, it's actually the same cost as buying it outright. There's no rent-to-own option, though -- so you wouldn't have access to the cheaper upgrade price once Creative Suite 6 rolls around next year. Still, if you need access to Photoshop, After Effects or Premiere for a one-time project, the new rental scheme could be exactly what you're looking for.

In other news, Adobe has announced that it will be launching three rather exciting iPad apps that work in conjunction with Photoshop: Eazel, Nav, and Color Lava. Eazel lets you five-finger paint on your iPad, and export the result into Photoshop; Nav acts as some kind of workspace, brush and menu extension, and the hopefully named Color Lava is a paint mixing palette. The apps are expected to appear in the App Store in the next 30 days.
