Teamly Aims Creates Realtime Staff Performance Streams For Small Businesses

Roaming the Startup Alley at TechCrunch Disrupt I came across Teamly, a new web app designed to help businesses manage their employees better. Yes, I know that sounds familiar, but what I liked about it was that this was a super, super simple app compared to a lot of the feature-crammed companies out there in this space. The issue here is that a lot of corporate systems for managing people are really not designed for small businesses. They are just too complex, being packed full of to-do's, tasks and projects. So Teamly is out to try and makes all that performance monitoring way easier.

HP: homebrew apps for webOS are OK with us!

Filed under:

One thing I love about my Palm Pre is that I'm able to run homebrew apps without performing any firmware surgery on it. Thanks to PreWare (et al) the apps are easy to find, easy to install, and a select few like Internalz have become some of my most-used.

I'm not the only one who seems to like homebrew apps. HP, it turns out, thinks they're pretty cool, too. They agree with a recent post from Palm's Tim Stiffler-Dean that there are great apps to be had from sources other than the App Catalog. So where else can you look for your next favorite webOS app? Check out PreCentral's App Gallery, appSpotlight, and appScoop (which contains beta apps Palm doesn't push to the App Catalog).

I can't imagine Apple ever singing the praises of an app that's only available in Cydia, can you?

ToVieFor: Entertainment Shopping Meets High Fashion (With Cheap Handbags Galore!)

"Entertainment Shopping" is one of the more controversial genres of startups emerging on the web. The basic premise: you pay for a chance to get something at far cheaper than it normally sells for, but there's a risk that you'll come away with nothing. It's part gambling, part bargain hunting and it's proved to be very popular, with sites like Swoopo leading the charge and other sites bringing the model to hotels and other verticals. And today, TechCrunch Disrupt Finalist ToVieFor is bringing entertainment shopping to a new market: high fashion. If you like Gilt Groupe (a site that offers high-fashion items in fire-sales), this should be right up your alley. Log onto the site, and you'll see an array of high-end handbags and accessories being sold off at a potentially steep discount. If you want to buy one (or at least, a chance to buy one), you need to buy some ToVieFor credits, which run 99 cents and are cheaper in bulk. And then you can get down to business.

Office Web Apps used by 20 million, now embeddable via IFRAME, and more

Despite our woeful lack of coverage for Office Web Apps, I'm glad to announce that Microsoft has been keeping its cloud-computing cogs churning: Office Web Apps has, in its first 100 days, been used by over 20 million people, and is now available in seven more countries: Australia, Austria, Belgium, France, Germany, Russia and Switzerland.

You can also now embed PowerPoint presentations and Excel spreadsheets on any website with the power of the IFRAME. This is what they look like:

A bunch of other changes have also been made to the Web apps themselves. You can now open Office files on your desktop directly from SkyDrive, and PowerPoint now has clip-art and more themes!

There's a video after the break (Silverlight powered, of course!) that shows off the new features.

Konami's Road Fighters 3D hits Japan's arcades

We know it's tough to deal with the sorry state of arcades these days, but they're still thriving in Japan, and Konami has just announced one more reason to be jealous in the form of Road Fighters 3D. As you can see, that's actual 3D complete with 3D glasses, although the game can apparently also be played in 2D if you're not quite ready to experience "one of the most thrilling arcade racing experiences on the planet." Keeping up with other modern arcade machines, the game also has an online multiplayer mode, and it incorporates Konami's PASELI digital cash system so you don't have to worry about having enough change. Look for it to hit arcades in Japan by the end of the month.

Apple TV jailbreak confirmed, done via same exploit as other iOS 4.1 devices

The Shatter exploit that was discovered for iOS 4.1 devices has, predictably enough, been found to function on the latest Apple TV as well. Though a jailbreak fit for distribution is still brewing for all of Apple's iOS wares, this will be welcome news to folks interested in trying to add a little extra functionality to Apple's hockey puck of a media streamer. Then again, even the best of apps might not make up for it being a 720p media device in a 1080p world.

[Thanks, Jawad]

Panasonic Toughbook S9 claims to be the world's lightest 12.1-inch laptop with a DVD drive, we believe it

Panasonic's Toughbook line hasn't only been impressing in extreme durability lately, but also in extreme weight-loss. Joining the 3.2-pound Tougbook C1, is the newest 12.1-inch Toughbook S9, which weighs just three pounds. And yes, Panny's claiming it's the lightest 12-incher with an optical drive, and our quick research seems to prove that claim right. Even more impressive is the power that's packed into the featherweight chassis -- it's got a Core i5-520M processor, 2GB of RAM, and a shock-mounted 320GB hard drive. Thought that Panasonic gave up the durability for that weightage? You'd be wrong -- the magnesium alloy case can still withstand a 2.5-foot operating drop, meets all the Mil Spec 810-G drop procedures, has a spill-resistant keyboard, and can take more than 220 pounds of pressure on its lid and base. It does sound great for when someone drops it off the airport security belt, but that's until you hear about the physical beating it'll take on your bank account -- it'll retail for $2,499. Yeah, we wish we had better news to end on, but perhaps the press release and pictures below will turn that frown upside down.
